For some of us, haircare is our livelihood. Whether you have thick, thin, curly, or straight hair, we can all agree that rocking shiny hair is the key to leaving a good impression. Which is why proper hair care is critical. So, while we all have different routines we swear by, I wanted to share some quality tips that saved my hair from extensive damage throughout the years.
Growing up I always had naturally curly and frizzy hair. Therefore, I constantly find myself applying heat to maintain my lion mane. From dying my hair darker to avoid breakage, getting multiple Keratin treatments, and even swearing by my hair extensions. I have learned that using simple natural home remedies can leave you with beautiful healthy hair, prevent breaking the bank, and most importantly protect your beloved hair from harsh climate change.
Make conditioner your best friend
Once temperatures started to drop here in Chicago, I imminently turned to my friend Marin who works for Monat Hair Company. Cold weather and harsh winds are typically known for creating dry hair. So, Marin provided me with a reasonably priced hydrating deep conditioner to help prevent breakage and dandruff. While I am usually nervous to test out new products and fall for social media hair companies, Monat truly won me over. Their deep conditioner left me with sleek and shiny hair that takes on the harsh weather of the windy.
Ditch the bath towel
If you’re anything like me, you rub your hair dry with a towel after a shower. However, did you know our coarse bath towels can cause hair loss and breakage. “Vigorously drying your hair with a towel, is destructive to your hair’s cuticles, or the out layer of each strand of your hair,” says Leon Van-Gorkom, a senior manager of hair care at Unilever Research and Development. So, DYI at home by using a soft cotton T-shirt or a microfiber cloth to avoid this problem.
Turn off the hot water
Ladies and gents, say goodbye to hot water and say hello to a refreshing, yet chilly shower. After all this time, I never knew the temperature of my shower affected the health of my hair. Hot water weakens your hair follicles, causes damage to your scalp, and can form horrific knots. Therefore, try to wash your hair with lukewarm water and then a quick flash of cold water at the end of your shower to close up the hair follicles.
DYI Treatments
If you scroll through social media nowadays, you see everyone resorting to fruits and vegetables that they have around the house, to create a DYI-kind of treatment. For instance, combinations such as avocado and banana, yogurt and honey are some of the most well-known ingredients for a successful hair mask. Playing around in the kitchen will leave you with a healthy hair glow and will stimulate growth.
Take Vitamins
My mother and grandmother have been telling me to take my vitamins for years! However, it was just recently when I truly recognized the power of the vitamin. Taking vitamins, A and C will kick start your hair growth journey. Not obtaining these nutrients will make your hair prone to breakage and remain thin.
Edit your diet
If you want Rapunzel hair, you must stick to a healthy diet. Eating foods that are packed with protein like eggs, salmon, and avocados will help grow your hair out.
Trips to the salon
Yes, in order to have long beautiful locks, you need to cut it. While this sounds counterproductive, regularly trimming your hair is significant to the hair growth process. Small trims once in a while will help prevent split ends from getting worse.
